Blogging can be a great way to expand the name of yourself or your company. However, for many people figuring out not only how to write a blog but also how make it interesting can be a daunting task. In this article, we will look at some good tips for making your next blog both content rich and intriguing to the reader.

Blogging is a great way to express your ideas and opinions to a potentially very large group of people. However, knowing what ideas or topics to write on can be very difficult. This difficulty comes from the fact that:

A) Many people tend to worry that they have nothing important enough to write about

B) Even if you do have some topics you want to write on, the topic should possess enough appeal to eventually attract a following of readers.

So Where to Start?

The majority of bloggers out there post their blogs as a way of promoting themselves and even their companies. However, in order for these bloggers’ postings to be effective they need to have both great content and, even more importantly, an ‘appeal’ or, rather, topic that intrigues people to read more. Therefore, selecting both an interesting, and relevant topic to you or your business is always a great place to start.

Writer's Block

Writer and blogger, Carole Matthews has a “Top 10 List for Web Blogging,” which gives some great tips on ways of getting into writing blogs. While all of these tips are important, I think that none are more important than the old saying of ‘practice makes perfect’. Like anything in life with more practice comes more skill and ability.

For blog writing, she suggests writing on a bunch of different topics before posting your first versions online. This will not only allow you to hone your skills but also create a voice and position in your writing.

What to Write On?

For a great list on blog writing topics go to, www.chrisbrogan.com and check out his list of great topics to write on. These are great topics to practice writing on and for getting feedback from friends. You could also check places such as www.Digg.com or www.huffingtonpost.com for the up to date news topics and other stories that might inspire your next blog posting. We also posted a similar blog article on our own website a while back entitled, “Best Practices Approach to Writing for the Web: Nine Quick Tips,” which can provide some good rules for when you have started to write out your blog ideas.

At Tidal, we try to always recommend space for a blog on our clients’ websites in addition to writing many (such as this one) for our own company. They help us not only in ‘spreading the word’ about our company but also in providing our own insights and tips that we have picked up along the way.

Now Get Started

Regardless, of what your topic is, the best way to get into blog writing is simply to sit down and start writing out some of those different ideas you have had circling around in your head for a while. As you become more comfortable with your writing and you’re feedback from friends, co-workers or even family is positive, then take those blogs and start posting them on a website to share with the rest of the world. Who knows? You may find your blog postings may help you discover new business opportunities or a new passion altogether!
